Nate Amos — also of Water From Your Eyes — releases his second album under the name This Is Lorelei, «The Singer in My Band», on 11 September via Matador: eleven songs written on tour in a van, with no access to instruments, which he himself describes as a writing exercise done in fragments, between stops.
The songs vary wildly in scale from one to the next («Nitro» runs one minute twenty-six, «The Kid With the Crown» stretches to four fourteen), and Matador frames the record as one that «takes pieces of the Great American Songbook and twists them into new shapes»: American pop run through a slightly warped filter.
That fragmented writing method — an idea here, another there, with none of the through-line of an album conceived in one sitting — shows in the result: «The Singer in My Band» jumps from song to song with plenty of energy, but without the cohesion Amos had already found on his solo debut, «Box For Buddy, Box For Star» (2024).
