Spanish Love Songs had the title “Future Nausea” before they had the songs: according to their label, Pure Noise Records, it’s a phrase Dylan Slocum first heard in passing on a podcast. The album came out on 6 November and is streaming in full on the band’s Bandcamp. It has twelve tracks: it opens with the title track, track ten is “Future Nausea Pt. 2” and it closes with “Until the Sun Explodes”. “Good American”, “Doom Tripping” and “Welcome to Hell” were released as singles ahead of the album. It was produced, in separate sessions, by former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla and Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin.
Spanish Love Songs formed in Los Angeles in 2013. They’re now a five-piece: Dylan Slocum on vocals and guitar, his wife Meredith Van Woert on keyboards, Kyle McAulay on guitar, Ruben Duarte on drums and newest member Mike Trujillo on bass. Their previous full-length, “No Joy”, also on Pure Noise, came out on 25 August 2023, and in 2025 the band released the EP “A Brief Intermission in the Flattening of Time”.
“When I first sat down to work on the record, I basically told everybody I just wanted to make a big rock record,” the singer explains, adding: “I wanted it to be as angry politically as it could be. More angry than sad. I actually think this is the least sad record we’ve ever made.” The same press notes say “Until the Sun Explodes” was largely tracked in one take.
