Out Of Your Head Records · 6 November 2026
“Deflection Pool” is a single improvisation running just over fifty-five and a half minutes, recorded live at Lowlands on 11 August 2026 and released on 6 November by Out Of Your Head Records. There are five players: Tim Berne on saxophone, Craig Taborn on synthesizers, Aurora Nealand on accordion, voice and clarinet, Aliya Ultan on cello and Tom Rainey on drums. David Torn mastered it. Alongside the full piece, the album page also offers an excerpt of just under seven minutes.
It’s the fifth instalment of Beacons, a digital-only series of fully improvised performances that the label launched in June 2025 to showcase music from a far wider area than its usual catalogue, which is mostly based in Brooklyn, Richmond, Baltimore and Chicago.
Berne and Nealand have played together before in the trio Oceans And, with cellist Hank Roberts, which released a self-titled album on Intakt in April 2023 and “Lucid / Still” on Berne’s own Screwgun label on 5 April 2024. Ultan put out “Looks Far Woman” last June, a solo cello record produced by Randall Dunn for Kou Records.
