The Darius Brubeck Quartet hadn’t put out an album since “Live in Poland”, released by Ubuntu Music on 13 December 2019. The new one, “Live Again”, came out on ECN Music on 6 November: nine tracks and around forty-four minutes, seven of them written by the pianist. There’s “Brexit Blues”, “Playing the Changes”, “Autumn Elegy”, the longest at eight minutes, “Prelude & Funque”, “Transkei”, “SLEE”, “Searching for…” and, to close, “Somebody in Seoul”.
The two pieces the leader didn’t write come from two of his bandmates: “Matt’s Different Views”, the shortest and the opener, is by bassist Matt Ridley and “Searching for…” by saxophonist Dave O’Higgins. Drummer Wesley Gibbens completes the line-up. Two tunes were released ahead of the album: “SLEE” on 25 September and “Brexit Blues” on 16 October.
Before “Live in Poland”, the quartet’s releases included “Cathy’s Summer” (2014) and “Years Ago” (2016).
