Bombino brings «Sahel» to La (2) de Apolo

Nigerien guitarist Bombino performs at La (2) de Apolo, on Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 111, on Tuesday 17 November. Doors at half past seven, show at half past eight, with Piñata Music. The ticket price isn’t listed in the promoter’s announcement.

Omara Moctar, his real name, plays what’s usually labelled desert blues: repeated, hypnotic guitar cycles over light percussion and singing in Tamasheq. He arrives with “Sahel”, and live the band stretches the tracks well beyond their recorded length.

Bombino is Tuareg and learned to play during years of exile in Algeria and Libya, following the uprisings of the nineties. In Niger the electric guitar became associated with rebellion: during the 2007 conflict the government banned Tuareg music, two musicians from his band were executed, and he fled to Burkina Faso.
