Ryley Walker has signed to AD 93 and released “Carrier” through the label, his first new music since “Course in Fable”, the 2021 album. The song is out now.
The guitarist explains how he made it: “Just digital distortion in PPOOLL/Max/MSP and a pitched-down loop of a failed guitar demo from my phone. Ditched years earlier. Totally broken, but refried and refurbished.” He chipped away at it in his apartment in downtown New York after closing shifts at the service-industry job he had: “Clock-out jams. Great period of exhaustion.”
The sound comes from the computer musicians who floated around the noise scene when he was starting out, and whom he names: Loren Connors, Kevin Drumm and Caspar Brötzmann. The song, he says, was written thinking of people back home in Rockford, Illinois: “Wearing SpongeBob pyjama pants to a funeral-type heads. I imagined them screaming behind the wheel of a salvage-title Honda Civic with a lift kit.” Walker now lives in Los Angeles.
