“Into The Waves”, Maiah Wynne’s new album, came out on 25 September through Kscope, and the label has now put out the video for “Girl Dinner”, shot by Hashim Ahmad and edited by George Laycock. Wynne sings in Envy of None, the band she shares with Alex Lifeson, and he plays guitar on the record as a guest.
She wrote and produced the album herself, recording it between her first international tour, a move to the other side of the world and a return to study. Much of it was captured in hotel rooms on nothing more than a laptop, and she plays more than a dozen instruments on it. Justin Abel handled mixing and additional production, and Alan Douches mastered it.
Cellist Bethany Joyce, violinist Avelyn Reynolds, guitarist Brooks Berg, drummers Adam Brzycki and Randy Cooke and flugelhorn player Henry Sheppard all appear. Of working with her, Lifeson told Rolling Stone: “I’ve never had that kind of inspiration working with another musician.”
“Girl Dinner”, Wynne says, is a tongue-in-cheek protest song about late capitalism and the powerlessness of reading the news every day: “Playing this song on tour with the audience singing along was one of the most meaningful experiences I have ever had through music, and I tried to capture that feeling in the recording.” The album gets a launch show on 14 October at Piano Smithfield in London, doors at seven.
