Glenn Hughes has said he is home after open-heart surgery. “Now home after an eight day stay, and a 10 hour open heart surgery, operation, at UCLA, Ronald Reagan, Medical Center,” he wrote. “Gratitude beyond.”

On 4 August he announced he was retiring from live performance on medical advice, after MRIs, CT scans and an echocardiogram showed his medical team that he needed another heart operation. “I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority,” he said at the time.

It is not the first time: in 2013 he was operated on for an enlarged aorta. Among the dates left behind is the 2 October show with The Purple Daisies in Agoura Hills, California. In January he had already cancelled a six-week North American tour, from 27 March to 10 May, from San Juan Capistrano to Tempe, then over a “minor health issue”.

Hughes was born on 21 August 1951 and is seventy-five. He joined Deep Purple in 1973, coming from Trapeze, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2016.
