Iceland’s Sigur Rós perform at the Auditori Fòrum del CCIB on Friday 11 September, at 21:00 with doors open from 19:00. They’re joined by the 41 musicians of the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ames, and the date marks the final stretch of the orchestral tour.
They arrive with “ÁTTA” as their latest album, released in 2023, exactly ten years after “Kveikur”. It’s the most openly orchestral work in their whole catalogue: almost no drums, built on strings and on Jónsi Þór Birgisson’s falsetto, with Kjartan Sveinsson back in the band. In 2025 came “Takk… (The Tape Variations)”, a rework of the 2005 album credited to Sidney Sotorsky rather than the band.
Sigur Rós took an idea that in the nineties was niche — the song as a long, returnless build — and pushed it into territory where the lyrics stopped mattering: Jónsi sings much of the repertoire in “Vonlenska”, a made-up language, and plays guitar with a cello bow. “Ágætis byrjun” and “( )” remain the genre’s reference points.
