Obscura and Pestilence headline Shred Fest 2027 at Wolf, with three more bands

Obscura, Pestilence, Cryptic Shift, Thus and DVRK play Wolf on Friday 5 February 2027, part of Shred Fest 2027. Doors open at half past five in the afternoon, tickets cost 36 €, and it’s run by Madness Live. With five bands on the bill, anyone wanting to catch it all needs to arrive early.

Pestilence formed in 1986 in Enschede and moved from thrash to death metal with “Consuming Impulse” (1989). In 1993 they released “Spheres”, recorded with guitar synthesizers and fusion harmonies, an album that at the time cost them much of their audience and is now a cult favourite.

Obscura are sixteen years younger: Steffen Kummerer started them in Landshut in 2002, taking the name from a Gorguts album, and “Cosmogenesis” (2009) is what gave them traction outside Germany. They play technical death metal built on intricate composition, with fretless bass pushed well forward in the mix.

Both bands belong to the same branch of the genre, the one that reached for jazz-rock before speed. Atheist had already gotten there with “Piece of Time” (1990) and “Unquestionable Presence” (1991), both predating “Spheres”, and Cynic released “Focus” that same 1993.
