Thy Catafalque have released «Búcsú a piros madártól» — «Farewell to the Red Bird» — the opening track from «XIII: Sárga erdő», the thirteenth record from Hungarian Tamás Kátai’s project, out 20 November via Season of Mist.
It’s the first Thy Catafalque record built on played, rather than programmed, drums. Thirty-four musicians took part, along with a twenty-voice male choir, and the folk and classical instrumentation — piano, strings, brass, sitar, kamancheh, zither — sits more restrained than on the twelfth. It’s twelve tracks.
Kátai filmed the video himself, in the woods a ten-minute walk from his family’s house in Makó, by the river Maros. It’s the same spot where the band’s first video was shot twenty-five years ago. He’s cut in footage from shows in Brazil, France and Hungary with hand-drawn animation, deliberately left rough: «I wanted it that way because it has a more personal touch.»
