Michel Camilo returns to the trio format in Barcelona, with Ricky Rodríguez and Antonio Sánchez

Dominican pianist Michel Camilo brings his trio to the Palau de la Música Catalana on Friday 16 October, at 21:00, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival. He’s joined by Ricky Rodríguez on double bass and Antonio Sánchez on drums. According to the promoter, it’s been nearly two decades since Camilo last played in trio format in Barcelona.

Camilo has spent more than forty years bringing the American jazz tradition together with Caribbean rhythmic language: a left hand that works like a percussion section, at a speed that never sounds like empty showmanship. Sánchez was for years the drummer in the Pat Metheny Group and composed the original drum score for “Birdman”; the film’s soundtrack also included classical pieces, which is why it was disqualified from the Oscars.

The two musicians met by chance at a rehearsal at the Liceu Conservatory and, according to the promoter, Sánchez — who had just moved to the Maresme — half-jokingly told him they should play together someday.
