Mary Halvorson hadn’t led a quartet in years, and Canis Major has changed that. On Thursday 19 November at 8.30pm she brings it to the Conservatori del Liceu as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival. “It feels like the start of something very special,” she says in the festival’s listing. “The music grows exponentially every time we play together.”
She’s joined by Dave Adewumi on trumpet, Henry Fraser on double bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. “I really love the depth, the interaction and the intensity this band brings to my music,” she adds.
It’s the guitarist’s third visit to the festival: in 2021 she brought her sextet Code Girl, and in 2023 her duo with pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. Her latest album as a leader is “About Ghosts”, from 2025; no Canis Major recording has been announced.
The night before, they play the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastián, and then move on to Ghent, Florence and Zagreb. Barcelona is the only date in Catalonia.
Concert tickets include free entry to the masterclass Halvorson gives at the Conservatori at 4.30pm that day; the discount code that gets you in is printed on the ticket. Amics del Jazz members get 15% off. The listing doesn’t give the ticket price.
