Saturday 14 November, two sets at Jamboree, 7pm and 8.30pm: Cuban double bassist Gastón Joya brings The New Cuban Trio. Miguel “Wiwi” García is on piano and Frank Durán on drums.
The repertoire takes in Joya’s own compositions, pieces by Mario Bauzá, Chico O’Farrill and Charles Mingus, and boleros, danzones, filin and son. Bauzá and O’Farrill were two of the musicians who fused big-band jazz with Cuban music in New York in the 1940s; at Jamboree that music comes down to three instruments.
The venue’s page notes that Joya has played with Chucho Valdés, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano, Sting and the Buena Vista Social Club. His latest album under his own name on streaming services is “Mamá Ina” (2018). Hummo Producciones is promoting the show.
