Father John Misty has released “The X-panded Universe” and announced eight solo dates in December, the first tour in that format he has played since 2013. It opens on 9 December at the Boulder Theatre in Colorado and closes on the 19th at the Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea, with Damien Jurado supporting throughout. Tickets go on sale on 2 October.
The song was written and composed by Josh Tillman, arranged by Drew Erickson and co-produced by the two of them. It is the third standalone release of 2026, after “The Payoff” in May and “The Old Law” in January; that last one had circulated among listeners as “God’s Trash” since he first played it live in autumn 2024. Tillman’s most recent album is “Mahashmashana”, from November 2024.
The two Carmel-by-the-Sea nights benefit the Big Sur Park School. Before any of it, Tillman plays solo on 6 October at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, sold out. He had already tried the format this summer at the Newport Folk Festival, where he stepped in at short notice for Tedeschi Trucks Band with a largely acoustic set and several unreleased songs.
