Tenor saxophonist Enrique Oliver plays with Among3 — Roger Mas on piano, Bori Albero on double bass and Juanma Nieto on drums — on Friday 13 November in the Jamboree’s Sala 1, playing two sets, at 7pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are €16, or €12 for Jamboree members.
According to the Jamboree, which bills the gig as a reunion, Oliver and the trio have been friends since the turn of the century. That friendship produced “Mason”, by the Roger Mas Quintet, released on Fresh Sound New Talent and named album of the year for 2007 by the Associació de Músics de Jazz i Música Moderna de Catalunya, the Catalan jazz musicians’ association. Before that, the trio had already recorded “Among 3” for the same label, at Estudi Laietana in Barcelona between December 2004 and February 2006, with Jon Robles, Ernesto Aurignac, Jaume Llombart and David Mengual as guests. The venue calls the trio a laboratory that brought them into contact with many other players.
Oliver, who is from Andalusia, has recorded as a sideman on more than forty albums, among them Jorge Rossy’s “Wicca”, Perico Sambeat’s “Voces” and Joan Chamorro and Rita Payés’s “Lua Amarela”. He made his debut as a leader with “Introducing Enrique Oliver Quintet”; he has co-led Wild Bunch, with two albums, and played more than a hundred gigs as a duo with guitarist Jaume Llombart. He was one of the musicians picked for the 2017–18 Focusyear Band in Basel, where the coaches included Dave Holland and Joshua Redman.
The venue links it to a tour of Andalusia from 13 to 19 October. The listing doesn’t announce a new album.
