Sofia Ribeiro plays two sets in the Jamboree’s Sala 3 on Thursday 12 November, at 7pm and 8.30pm, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival. General admission is 20 euros.
In early October, speaking to the Portuguese news agency Lusa in Caracas, Ribeiro was already talking about a new project with Portuguese guitar and more fado, which she called “almost inevitable” because she is Portuguese and is embracing her roots more and more. According to the festival listing, she’s bringing her new album, “A um passo”, surrounded by strings: Manel Ferreira on seven-string guitar and Portuguese guitar, Marta Roma on cello and Carlos Montfort on violin, with Ribeiro singing and playing ukulele. The Project also lists a guest, Colombian pianist and singer Juan Andrés Ospina, who doesn’t appear on the Jamboree’s page.
The Jamboree describes it as a meeting of jazz harmony, Latin American rhythm and fado, with improvisation at its heart.
The venue credits her with eleven albums under her own name. Among the earlier ones on streaming services are “Ar” (2012), “Mar Sonoro” (2016), “Lunga” (2019) and “Casa” (2021). It isn’t her first time at the festival: The Project says she’s “back”.
Under-16s can only get in with a parent or legal guardian, and must bring a printed, completed liability form.
