Steve Hogarth

Singer, co-writer and principal lyricist of Marillion since 1989, during which the band has produced 16 studio albums: the most recent, “An Hour Before It’s Dark”, reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the Rock Chart. Outside Marillion, he has collaborated with Richard Barbieri, Gleb Kolyadin and legendary producer Trevor Horn, both in the studio and live.

h began performing solo as an experiment, to strip his favourite songs down to their essence. Alongside minimalist performances of his extensive Marillion catalogue, he’s known for covering songs by artists as varied as Leonard Cohen, ABBA, Glen Campbell, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Al Stewart, Kraftwerk, Crowded House, Rufus Wainwright, Kate Bush, The Isley Brothers, Carole King, The Waterboys and David Bowie, to name just a few.

He has published two volumes of diaries, “The Invisible Man Diaries”, from which he occasionally reads during his “h Natural” shows, and currently hosts his own podcast, “The Corona Diaries”, with his friend Anthony Short.

“It’s liberating to escape, now and then, from the discipline of Marillion’s heavily arranged music. It’s fantastic to be able to expose the voice and its nuance, to be able to do anything on the fly, follow the audience’s energy and know they can hear the lyrics. When I sing with the band it’s like riding a monster, very exciting, but very fixed structurally speaking, so working alone is a chance for intimacy, tenderness and spontaneity… a more volatile performance, shaped by the audience.”

“I play whatever I feel like playing during the show. I try to keep a dialogue going with the audience, so don’t hesitate to ask me one or two questions. Don’t just ask me to play this song or that one, ASK me something! Having said that, I often play requests too. I play songs that, for whatever reason, have been important in my life.”

An opportunity, then, to experience the voice of Marillion up close and in a (very) personal way.
