Thirty-seven years of grindcore in Spanish, satire and invented mythology

Brujeria play La Nau on Friday 13 November. Doors at seven in the evening, tickets 25 €, with Madness Live. The band formed in 1989 in Los Angeles as an anonymous project: musicians from Fear Factory, Napalm Death and Faith No More have passed through it, hidden behind pseudonyms and an invented mythology of Mexican narco-satanists. Thirty-seven years later the formula stays the same: short, dry grindcore and death metal, always sung in Spanish. “Esto Es Brujeria” is their most recent release.

Beneath the persona and the cover art there has always been a fairly direct commentary on the border, immigration and US policy toward Mexico, made from the inside and in Spanish, within a genre that in the nineties was almost entirely English-speaking.
