American drummer Nate Smith plays Sala Apolo on Monday 2 November, at 20:30 with doors at 19:30. He performs in quartet, marking his debut as a headliner of the Barcelona Jazz Festival, now in its 58th edition.
The tour is called the LIVE ACTION Tour and presents “Live-Action”, released in 2025 and winner of two Grammys: Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Arrangement. Before that came the two volumes of “Kinfolk”, from 2017 and 2021, blending jazz, soul and rhythm and blues with an autobiographical approach and a long list of guests.
Smith was the drummer for Dave Holland and Chris Potter before releasing anything of his own, and his phrasing — making a compound time signature sound like a hip-hop beat — has been widely studied and imitated, largely through the practice videos he posts himself. He has just been named artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival.
