Andrea Motis and Yamandu Costa play together at the Palau’s Sala de Concerts on Wednesday 21 October, at half past eight in the evening. Tickets range from 30 to 58 €. The show is part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival, produced by The Project, and is a commission from the festival itself: the duo debuts here.
Motis brings trumpet and voice; Costa, seven-string guitar. “This was a collaboration sitting in the drawer of dreams, and now we have a confirmed date and time,” she says in the festival’s listing.
The festival has already described the repertoire: Latin American and Brazilian pieces, Catalan ones, originals by the two of them and covers of songwriters like Silvio Rodríguez and Joan Manuel Serrat. “We’ll definitely play ‘Carinhoso’, by Pixinguinha, which is a hymn to Brazil,” Costa previews.
“It’ll be a very intimate night, almost minimalist,” says Costa. Motis adds: “Ever since I saw the video of Yamandu with Roberta Sá performing ‘Modinha’, by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to sing accompanied by his guitar.”
Motis arrives with “Intimate”, released this past February through Elemental Music. This isn’t her only festival date: on 13 December she returns with her Guitar Trio — Jurandir dã Silva and Josep Traver on guitars, with cellist Marta Roma as guest — at the Teatre-Auditori Emma Vilarasau in Sant Cugat, closing out her year there.
Under-sixteens must be accompanied by an adult and carry a signed liability form. The Palau’s box office is open Monday to Saturday from half past eight in the morning to nine in the evening.
