Progressive rock is a genre often defined by its musical complexity and profound lyrics. How would you describe your approach to progressive rock, and what themes or concepts do your songs explore?
As someone once put it, ‘eclectic’. Ekzilo is a blend of influences ranging from a classic take on progressive rock through to jazz, flamenco, and more. Through music, Ekzilo’s songs explore the concerns that drive human beings in this complex world we find ourselves living in.
What musical influences have contributed most significantly to your sound, and how have you woven them into your music?
The influences are quite varied, and it depends on each member, but they range from Pink Floyd, Triana, King Crimson, Santana, and so on.
How do you create your compositions, and how do you approach collaboration within the band during that process?
Usually I (José Ruiz) bring in a first sketch, which the whole band then shapes together. Everyone contributes their own ideas and styles.
What can attendees expect from your concert in Barcelona, and how do you prepare your stage show?
Audiences in Barcelona will find a genuine live band, inspired by those ’70s bands who made their live shows their greatest strength.
What has been the most significant song you’ve written so far, and why?
The band is currently preparing the release of their second album. If I had to pick a track from the first one, it would be ‘Ekzilo’, the only song with lyrics and vocals, and ‘Desembre’, a track played on Spanish guitar imitating the sound of the Turkish oud.
Do you have more concerts planned elsewhere in Spain?
Ekzilo’s next date will be in Seville, on 2 December, alongside the Seville band Lemniscata.
