John Mitchell closes out, with «An Ending» (11 September, White Knight Records), the cycle Lonely Robot opened in 2015 with «Please Come Home»: the project’s sixth album and, in his own words, the one meant to «close the circle of the Lonely Robot universe» by returning to the elements that first sparked the writing. Twelve tracks, fifty-five minutes, and Craig Blundell back on drums.
«In Ocean Light» carries a guitar solo that nods openly to David Gilmour, and «Show the Way» works as the record’s anthem, with a chorus built to be sung live; on the last two tracks, «The Iron Sea» and «Oblique», Mitchell turns the volume down and closes the Astronaut saga with the elegiac tone a long-announced ending calls for.
Not the whole record holds that level: «Rearview» runs down a path already familiar from earlier Lonely Robot albums without finding a new turn in it, working more as a bridge to the next song than as a piece with a life of its own.
