The final of the sixth SGAE Tete Montoliu Jazz Prize is played on 4 and 5 November at the Teatro Central in Seville, both days at half past six in the evening. Tickets are €8 a day.
Four works out of the 56 entered have made it through: “Javier (AKA Bad Seat Ass)” by Miguel López, “Grace” by Javier Moreno, “Quimera” by Bernardo Parrilla and “Haunters of the wood” by Luis Verde. The jury is Manuel Marvizón, Manuel Ignacio Ferrand, Trinidad Jiménez Piqueras, Julián Ruesga and Inés Portela.
Up to four prizes are awarded, worth €11,700 in total: €6,000 for the first, €3,000 for the second, €1,500 for the third and €1,200 for the fourth.
Fundación SGAE set up the Tete Montoliu Jazz Biennial in 1999, two years after the pianist’s death, and brought the composition competition back in 2021. Works previously awarded include “Paradiso” by drummer Xavi Maureta (2003), “Iboga” by pianist Federico Lechner (2005), “A Lyle” by Ruy Adrián López-Nussa (2021) and “Sin tempero” by Julián Sánchez (2024).
Vicenç Montoliu i Massana was born in Barcelona on 28 March 1933 and died there on 24 August 1997. Blind from birth, he recorded with Lionel Hampton in 1956 and played with Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Roland Kirk, among many others; he received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1983 and left more than eighty albums.
The 4 November programme includes the Julián Sánchez Quintet, winner of the 2024 edition, with a set built on Miles Davis.
