An all-star octet drawn from the Sant Andreu Jazz Band plays La Paloma on Wednesday 4 November at 8.15pm. The show is called “Frank & Louis” and it opens the Retrat d’Artista that the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival devotes to the band, which the festival says is twenty years old.
Joan Chamorro directs it from the double bass. With him are Lola Peñaranda on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Koldo Munné on alto saxophone and clarinet, Bernat Benavente on baritone saxophone, Elsa Armengou on trumpet, Luc Martín on trombone, Marc Martín on piano and Arnau Julià on drums.
Two guests sing. One is Edu Ferrer; the other is Ricard Gili, founder and leader of La Locomotora Negra, who also plays trumpet. The book is arrangements written for that night.
The band is already on this year’s programme by another route: this evening, Monday 12 October, it receives the festival’s Gold Medal at the “Blues for Tete & Bebo” concert at Park Güell, which starts at 7pm. The series began in 2008 with Bebo Valdés and it has since gone to Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis, among others.
The ticket price is not published anywhere. The only thing the promoter says about tickets is that the Amics del Jazz ones, at a 15% discount, have run out. Under-16s may only come in with a parent or legal guardian, and with the responsibility form printed and filled in.
