Rajery and Raúl Rodríguez play Sala 3 at Jamboree on Sunday 25 October, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival. They do two sets, at 7pm and 8.30pm. Neither the festival listing nor The Project’s gives a price.

The two of them play alone: Rajery on valiha and voice, Rodríguez on flamenco tres and voice.

What they bring is “Mandry Ve?”, an eleven-track record mixing traditional songs with compositions of their own. They met in 2019 in Antananarivo, at the Madagascar Flamenco Week run by the Spanish honorary consulate: two musicians from traditions that had never crossed, on the same bill more than eight thousand kilometres from Seville. Seven years later, the record.

Rajery is a master of the valiha, the tube zither made of bamboo that is Madagascar’s national instrument. Rodríguez is the Seville musician who built the flamenco tres by crossing the Cuban tres with the flamenco guitar.

The festival reaches its 58th edition this year and at the same time marks sixty years since the first Barcelona jazz festival: the numbers do not line up because there are years with no edition.
