Columbia Legacy puts Miles Davis’s “Copenhagen Live 1969” on sale on 27 November, for Record Store Day’s Black Friday, as a limited-edition double LP.

The group playing is the one collectors know as the Lost Quintet: Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Chick Corea on electric piano, Dave Holland on double bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. By the time they walked on stage in Copenhagen, “In a Silent Way” had been in the shops for four months and “Bitches Brew” had been recorded in August but would not appear until March 1970: what the double LP carries is that material played in front of an audience before the record existed for anyone.

The concert is not unreleased material: it already appeared on video inside the fortieth anniversary box set of “Bitches Brew”, published in 2010. What arrives now, and officially for the first time, is the double LP.

The sleeve is a Mati Klarwein painting titled “Zonked”, which had already been used in 1993 for a Last Poets record, “Holy Terror”.
