Miguel Zenón and Luis Perdomo play the Conservatori del Liceu on Tuesday 10 November at a quarter to nine in the evening, as part of the 58th Festival de Jazz de Barcelona. The show had been announced for the following day. The notice on the listing says that, given the general strike called for 11 November and in order to avoid the mobility and safety problems it may cause, it has been moved forward a day “in agreement with the artists and all the parties involved”.
The strike was called by CCOO and UGT on 8 October, with the CGT adding its own the next day; it runs for twenty-four hours from midnight. Anyone who cannot make the 10th can ask for a refund by writing to ticketing@theproject.es, and the festival warns that the bank may take between seven and fourteen days.
The album they bring is “El Arte del Bolero, Vol. 3”, which Miel Music, Zenón’s own label, released on 28 August. It is eight boleros, from “La Gloria Eres Tú” to “De Qué Callada Manera”. The series began with a digital-only volume in January 2021, and the second, from 25 August 2023, won the Grammy for best Latin jazz album the following year.
At the Conservatori it is just the two of them: Zenón on alto saxophone and Perdomo on piano. The same Tuesday, from five to half past six in the afternoon, they give a masterclass.
Zenón had played this same hall on 4 November 2023, with the Joey Calderazzo Trio and in the festival’s 55th edition. Last year he came back in another guise: on 29 November he premiered “Expressions” at L’Auditori’s Sala Oriol Martorell, a concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra written for him by the four artistic directors of the Barcelona Art Orchestra, which came out on record this June. The festival says his quartet has played the festival three times, without giving the years.
The price appears on none of the three official listings: it only shows up at checkout. The same night, at half past eight, the festival has Kyle Eastwood at Paral·lel 62.
