Loma Vista Recordings has opened a raffle for the chance to buy one of the 170 copies pressed of a “Marrow Deep” edition with fossil mastodon tooth dust in the grooves. Registration opened on Friday and closes on 12 October at nine in the morning, Pacific time. Each copy costs $150, and only the winners get charged.
“About 20 years ago, we were given a giant bag of mastodon teeth… not display-worthy fossils, but a collection of teeth that left us wondering what to do with them,” the band write on the store listing. “Troy eventually had the wild idea to turn them into powder and press them directly into a vinyl record. Huge thanks to Loma Vista Recordings for connecting us with Waxworks to make this dream a reality!”
The teeth were ground down by the geology department at the University of Georgia, which reduced them to particles fine enough not to affect sound quality or playability. The band went to the plant to sprinkle the dust onto the wax by hand and press each copy themselves. Every one comes with a certificate of authenticity.
“Marrow Deep”, Mastodon’s ninth studio album, came out on 28 August on Loma Vista. The bone dust edition is a double LP and ships to the United States, Canada and Mexico only.
