Mark Guiliana plays the auditorium of the Conservatori Liceu on Thursday 12 November at half past eight, as part of the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival. Tickets are €36 through the festival’s box office, with 15% off for Amics del Jazz members.
He brings Beat Music as a trio: himself on drums, Chris Morrissey on electric bass and Nicholas Semrad on keys. The set draws on “BEAT MUSIC 2.0” and comes with an 8-bit visual world built by Steve Wall, a collaborator of his for years.
The same day, at half past four in the afternoon and in the same hall, Guiliana gives a masterclass. It costs €10, is free for students of the Conservatori Liceu and of the schools in the Catalan conservatoires association, and anyone holding a ticket for the concert gets in free with the code printed on it. It’s part of the Liceu Jazz series, which the Conservatori has been programming with the festival for fourteen years, with backing from the Fundació Ferrer de Música.
The tour takes in Madrid on 4 November, Badajoz on the 5th and Seville on the 6th, then comes back on the 12th to Barcelona, the last Spanish stop and the only Catalan one. The following night the trio are in Leuven, and in December they head to the United States, where Julian Pollack joins them.
Guiliana is the drummer on David Bowie’s last album, “Blackstar”, and has worked with Brad Mehldau, Meshell Ndegeocello, St. Vincent, M83 and Matt Cameron. Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Maria Schneider and Chucho Valdés have all taught in that same hall before him.
