Guitarist Julian Lage, in the Alysse Gafkjen photograph Blue Note is distributing with the single “Aberdeen”

Julian Lage has released “Aberdeen”, a track that did not make “Scenes from Above” and comes from the same sessions. That album is from 23 January this year, produced by Joe Henry, with the quartet completed by John Medeski on organ and piano, Jorge Roeder on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums. DownBeat called it “intimate yet expansive” and wrote that “this is the sound of a band discovering itself in real time”.

The single comes with an announcement: “The Reservoir Sessions” is out on 27 November, a Black Friday Record Store Day exclusive, on translucent orange vinyl and only at independent record shops. Joe Henry produced it too, and it holds six songs between Lage’s own compositions and standards, this time in a trio: Lage with Jorge Roeder on bass and Joey Baron on drums.

“Scenes from Above” is Lage’s fifth record for Blue Note.
