Juan Chiavassa opened pre-orders today for “Three on Three”, his second album for Whirlwind Recordings. The Argentinian drummer and composer, based in New York, plays it as a piano trio with David Kikoski and Boris Kozlov.
Both men passed through Roy Haynes’s trio, and that is where the record comes from. “Roy is my favorite drummer,” Chiavassa says. “He’s loose and sharp at the same time. He played with an openness in a way that nobody really did before. I’ve always loved the piano trio format; it’s so pleasing to the ear, and it can be so interactive and dynamic, so gentle or so aggressive, like a continuous conversation.”
The repertoire follows that line. Pat Metheny’s “James” was a staple of Haynes’s trio with Kikoski and Kozlov. There are two pieces from John Coltrane’s book: “Satellite”, which is his own, and the little-known “Vilia”, which he recorded in 1963 and which is in fact Franz Lehár’s, from “The Merry Widow”. Sonny Rollins’s “Grand Street” gives him the excuse for a long brushes solo. He adds two of his own, “Waltz” and “Weeksville” — his neighbourhood in Brooklyn — two by Kikoski and “Darn That Dream”, a last-minute studio suggestion.
Chiavassa debuted on the label with “Fourth Generation” and has since played with the Mike Stern band and produced Julieta Rada’s Grammy-nominated “Candombe”. Whirlwind has given no release date: for now there is only the pre-order, on CD, download and 180-gram vinyl.
