Chico Pinheiro brings his quartet to Jamboree on Tuesday 20 October. There are two sets, at seven and half past eight in the evening, in Room 1 on Plaça Reial. General admission is €25 and members pay €21, and the venue has the show marked as sold out. MasiMas Live promotes it.
“There are many incredible guitarists out there. High on the list, I’d include Chico Pinheiro,” says Pat Metheny. Brad Mehldau describes him as “someone who will be around for a long, long time”. Pinheiro is from São Paulo, lives in New York, and the venue introduces him through two Grammy nominations, both in the Best Latin Jazz Album category, which it dates to 2020 and 2021.
Barcelona is the sixth city on a sixteen-date European run in October. It starts on the 8th at Ronnie Scott’s in London and continues with four consecutive nights at the Half Note in Athens, from the 9th to the 12th: the guitarist’s first shows in Greece, and the ones that open the club’s forty-sixth season. Before reaching Plaça Reial it calls at Munich, Catania and Palermo. The quartet the Athens venue announces is completed by Hélio Alves on piano, Mathias Allamane on double bass and Rogério Pitomba on drums.
The Jamboree listing doesn’t say which record he is bringing. The other stops on the tour announce original compositions, pieces from “City of Dreams” — the 2020 album behind one of the two nominations — and readings of Brazilian classics. The most recent entry in his catalogue is “Two Brothers”, from 2023, cut as a duo with fellow guitarist Romero Lubambo.
