“Visage: The Third Eye”, Tomoki Sanders’s first solo album, will be out on Brownswood Recordings, Gilles Peterson’s label, on 12 February 2027. It has eight tracks. In 2023 they put out “Planet Q” as a duo with Kyoko Takenaka.
The third single is out today: “Tranquil Memories (Memories of Rodney James)”, dedicated to their close friend, the saxophonist and beat producer Rodney James-Spann, who died in April 2025. “Rather than mourning his loss, ‘Tranquil Memories’ celebrates the beauty of knowing that someone so gifted, inspiring, and deeply loved existed in this world and that I had the privilege of calling him my friend,” Sanders says. The label describes the track as straight-ahead jazz with the rhythmic pulse of acid jazz.
It follows “The Third Eye”, released in June, and “Jazz Is Just A Game”, in September, with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and singer Mélanie Charles.
Sanders was born in New York; their father was the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. They’ve worked with Kassa Overall, Ravi Coltrane, Taylor McFerrin and Jack DeJohnette.
