Cover of “Quantum Butterfly”, by Michael Moss

Self-released · 1 November 2026

Michael Moss put the four volumes of “Quantum Butterfly” on sale on 1 November 2026, digitally through his Bandcamp: twenty-three tracks adding up to just over four hours. The first, with the group ROOTS to SHOOTS, opens with Chick Corea’s “La Fiesta”, recorded live at the Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, New York, in the summer of 2022. Moss plays soprano saxophone, with Ismael Baiz on drums and percussion, Alexis Marcelo on piano and Adam Lane on bass. The set also takes in “Come Sunday” and “Goodbye Porkpie Hat”, among others.

The second volume belongs to Ensemble Bows, Moss’s group for strings, piano and reeds. Moss’s own “Abyss” and Sorin Lerescu’s “Far Away”, Op. 89 —commissioned by Moss himself and billed as a world premiere— were recorded on 5 May 2023 at Westbeth in New York, with Rosi Hertlein and Sunjay Jayaram on violins, Melanie Dyer on viola, Lenny Mims on cello, Ken Filiano on double bass and Anthony Coleman on piano. “Elegy for Danny” and the twenty-minute “Ain Soph” come from a performance on 22 October 2022 at St. John’s in the Village. The third volume includes the track that gives the set its name, “Quantum Butterfly/Adjacent Possibles”, which runs to almost twenty-five minutes. The fourth and final volume captures a ROOTS to SHOOTS concert at the Westbeth Center for the Arts in September 2025, with Warren Smith on vibraphone, Marcelo on piano and synthesiser, Lane on bass and Jackson Krall on drums: it features, among others, John Coltrane’s “Equinox” and “Transition”, Mongo Santamaría’s “Afro Blue”, Bill Evans’s “T.T.T.T.” and Moss’s original “March On”.
