Devin Shidaker, guitarist in The Acacia Strain, has opened a solo doom project called Spirit Wound. The first song, “The Light Refuses Me”, runs past ten minutes, and he wrote, recorded, produced and played all of it himself in one afternoon this summer, after a year of losses. It is on Bandcamp already and reaches the other platforms next week.
Shidaker doesn’t name the losses: “This has been a year filled with tremendous personal loss and tragedy, and this first song, The Light Refuses Me, is grief coming through my stream of consciousness into song.” He warns it isn’t the doom you might expect: “It’s doom, but it’s something different for me.”
The project has no schedule and doesn’t want one. “Continuing my commitment to writing and releasing music whenever I feel like it”, he writes.
