“The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961”, the box set gathering everything Miles Davis and John Coltrane recorded together for Columbia, is reissued on 6 November in two formats: six CDs or nine vinyl records. It’s fifty-eight tracks, released by Columbia and Legacy Recordings.
There’s material from “’Round About Midnight”, “Milestones”, “Kind of Blue”, “Jazz at the Plaza” and “Someday My Prince Will Come”, along with recordings that ended up on “Miles and Monk at Newport”, “Circle in the Round”, “Basic Miles” and “Birth of The Blue”. Eighteen of the fifty-eight tracks were previously unreleased when the box set first came out.
The original edition dates from 2000, produced by Michael Cuscuna and Bob Belden, and in 2001 it won two Grammys: Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package and Best Album Notes.
The vinyl edition comes with a sixty-page book and the CD with a hundred-and-sixteen-page one, featuring photographs, texts by original producer George Avakian and drummer Jimmy Cobb, notes by critic Bob Blumenthal and the ones Bill Evans wrote for “Kind of Blue”. The same day sees the release of a double-vinyl selection, “The Best Of Miles Davis & John Coltrane (1955-1961)”.
The reissue lands in the centenary year for both musicians: Davis was born on 26 May 1926 and Coltrane on 23 September of the same year.
